National History Day: Stonewall Riots

Yes, it is 2023 and it's ok to let us know if you are gay. Friends, Family, and Social networks will likely  support you in your life's journey. It hasn't always been like this. In the past, people could be arrested if they identified as gay, lesbian bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ).

For example: two minority Transgendered women, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera were sent to jail because they did not identify as the natural gender they were assigned with at birth. They both were advocates for the LGBTQ community which the police didn’t agree with so, the duo landed themselves in jail multiple times for this reason. During the 1960’s people did not like the fact that they had LGBTQ people living in community so, they negatively acted out of fear. I originally thought, “Why are people so homophobic?” but I’ve come to realize that people dislike others that's not like themselves, and people don’t enjoy different, living in their society.

The LGBTQ individuals stuck together in bars and such, so they can express themselves without living in fear. Soon afterwards, the N.Y. State Liquor Auth. shut down bars that suspected LGBT drinkers. Most of the homosexuals hid the that side of them as they were afraid of being judged or killed, it’s terrible to know that they originally had their own space to express themselves but then got shut down.

After the Gay Bars being closed, the LGBTQ community were ready to fight back for their rights. After 6 about years of fighting, they only got half of what the wanted. Obviously they still weren’t happy. After fighting for about, 6 YEARS, the LGBTQ community still didn’t get what they wanted, they couldn’t show any gay affection to others.

“How many years has it taken people to realize that we are all brothers and sisters and human beings in the human race?”
Marsha "Pay It No Mind" Johnson
Words From Madisyn:

You don't have to agree with what others think, you just have to be ok with them being in this world.
